Nokero (short for "No Kerosene") designs, manufactures and collectively distributes safe, affordable, and environmentally-friendly solar based technologies. Nokero's solar lights are high-quality and low-cost, eliminating the need for harmful and polluting fuels around the world.
Steve Katsaros, inventor of Nokero. Here's his story...
Inventor and entrepreneur Steve Katsaros started Nokero in June 2010 to develop safe and environmentally-friendly solar products that eliminate the need for harmful and polluting fuels used for light and heat around the world. Steve’s mission was to offer an affordable alternative to kerosene for developing communities hence the name Nokero (no kerosene).
An estimated 1.3 billion people live without access to electricity. Left in the dark, most turn to kerosene and other fossil fuels for light. Living with a kerosene lamp is like smoking 40 cigarettes a day, and more than 1.8 million people a year die from complications arising from indoor air pollution. Kerosene fires are common, killing more than 1 million each year. The goal of Nokero and their amazing team is to rid as many homes in developing communities of kerosene as possible to give them a healthier and safer life.
Fuel is also expensive – about $40 billion per year is spent on lighting fuel by the world’s poorest people, yet those who use kerosene receive only 0.1% of total lighting services. Money that could be used for food and medicine is spent on fuel instead. With quality light, a family can continue being productive – cooking, studying, earning extra money for the family – into the night. Without the burden of buying fuel a family is one step closer to escaping poverty. Nokero lights are helping move communities away from their dependence on kerosene.
From his earliest days, Stephen Katsaros’ life has been filled with innovation. As a mechanical engineer his first brush with “impact inventing” came in 2002 with RevoPower, a motorized wheel for bicycles. In early 2010, he came up with another bright idea – a simple, portable solar light bulb with the potential to revolutionize life for the 1.4 billion people in the world who live without access to electricity. Five months after his first sketch, Steve launched Nokero, a for-profit company with a mission to provide affordable solar technology solutions for poor, off-grid communities around the world.
Nokero solar light bulbs are the most economical non-kerosene lanterns in the world. Clean, safe solar lights that have multiple indoor and outdoor uses including camping, cooking, reading and during blackouts.
