LED lighting guide

We Live It specialise in LED lighting.

LED lighting is the most environmentally friendly lighting currently available. It provides the same amount of light provided by incandescent bulbs for almost one fifth of the electricity consumed.

LED light bulbs are a smarter technology that provides a superior quality light. We Live it only stocks the very best and reputable brands that are committed to protecting the environment, smarter usage of our planet’s resources and producing products that contain no harmful heavy metals.

Understanding LEDs

Deciding on what kind of LED lighting is best for you can be difficult, especially when there is a lot of jargon being used that you've never ehard before.  Below we have explained the most commong and not so common technical jargon in easy to understand terms.  By following this guide you'll have your home or business fitted out with the best energy saving LEDs on offer.

Watts          Lumens

In basic terms when used in reference to light bulbs, watts means the amount of electricity a light bulb would use in one hour.  So a 50 watt halogen light bulb uses the same amount of electricity in one hour that a 10.5 watt LED would roughly use in five hours.  By only using one fifth of the electricity the LED is costing 80% less in power costs.  High quality LEDs like Brightgreen last a lot longer than halogen bulbs which means you'll save money in the long run.

The term Lumens is used to describe the light output of a light source.  In basic terms the more lumens a light emits the brighter the light is.  A standard 50w halogen bulb produces 800 lumens on average; this has become the standard lumen output against which we measure other bulbs.  A quality LED bulb like Brightgreen produces 720 lumens but at a fraction of the electricity use.  A good indicator of an efficient bulb is the lumen to watts ratio - the Brightgreen DR700 produces 68 lm/W while a 50w Halogen is much less efficient at  16 lm/W

CRI Colour Temp
CRI stands for Colour Rendering Index.  CRI is a light source's ability to faithfully reveal colours of various objects in comparison with an ideal natural light source - our Sun.  CRI ratings are expressed as a number between 0 & 100, where 100 is the rating given to the Sun.  High quality LEDs such as Brightgreen's D900 have a CRI of 95 while a fluoro bulb can be as low as 50.  A higher CRI means your furnishings will look how you expect them to look.  A bulb's colour temperature is measured on the Kelvin scale, usually expressed as number such as 3000K (warm white) or 5000K (cool white) in basic terms the higher the colour temperature the bluer the emitted light looks and the lower the colour temperature the more orange it looks.  Halogen light bulbs are usually around 2700K a produce a yellow-orange glow we now associate with light bulbs.  Brightgreen's DR700 has a colour temperature of 3000K which is whiter light that is similar to daylight.

Beam Angle Payback
A light bulb's beam angle is the angle at which the light is directed towards the floor.  Most of our Brightgreen range has a beam angle of 60° which is suitable for most ceiling heights.  As a general rule low ceilings can accommodate wider beam angles while a high ceiling does best with narrower beam angles. Payback refers to the time it takes for a bulb's savings in electricity costs (when changing over to high watt halogen bulbs) to exceed the initial cost of the bulb which is often higher than less efficient halogens (when used for 10 hours each day).  While LED bulbs might seem expensive now they soon pay for themselves in savings, making them the more economical choice.
